This seminar and report discusses public key cryptosystems and some of the ways in which they can be used to verify the identity of a user. Problems using this technique are examined, along with some solutions to those problems. These solutions make use of certificates and certification authorities. The concept of a trusted path is introduced, and one possible technique which may remove the requirement for an ultimate trusted source is examined.
